I often get asked what is a broker, what is a sales representative, what is a realtor and what is the difference. I have also been asked what are the letters behind some agents names.
A sales representative is someone who has gone through the sales persons registration courses, there are three courses and exams prior to becoming licensed and then there are three more courses in your first two years in business. I have just completed the articling phase of the registration process.
Once you have finished the articling phase you can choose to continue your education and become a broker. A broker does the same job as a sales representative but has more education and training. A broker can also become a "broker of record" which means that they own or manage a real estate brokerage. (office)
The term Realtor is a registered certification mark that identifies the quality of services rendered by licensed real estate agents who are members of the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). To be a Realtor you must be a member of CREA.
SRES means Seniors Real Estate Specialist. These agents are specially qualified to address the needs of those aged 50+.
ABR is the Accredited Buyers Agent. These agents have taken courses and training to help them work directly with buyer clients.
There are other courses and designations that are optional. My goal for this year, now that I have finished the articling phase is to start the process of becoming a Broker and continuing my education.
