Whew!! The Sherwood Village food drive is done for another year. This was our third time doing a food drive in our neighbourhood.
It started with my colleague, Shana, and I brainstorming on ways that we could get to know our Sherwood neighbours and give back to the community at the same time. So we decided to do a food drive for our local food bank, the Inn of the Good Shepherd.
Neither of us had ever done anything like this before so we weren't sure where to start but we decided to forge ahead anyway. We created a poster that we had printed and delivered to the 1600 homes in our subdivision. We then started to wonder how we would visit all 1600 homes to pick up food on the day of the drive. We decided to ask the local high schools for student volunteers and we were lucky enough to have a bunch of students join us.
Along with the students, our family and friends and the generous residents of Sherwood Village subdivision we collected 2300 pounds of food to deliver to the local food bank.
In year two we did event better! We were a little better organized and prepared and we collected 3200 pounds of food for the Inn of the Good Shepherd!
We don't have the total amount for this year but we had lots of food in the truck and lots of tired students.
Thank you to the generous residents of Sherwood Village, our student volunteers and our family and friends who once again helped up to help the Inn.
Planning and organizing the food drive is getting easier every year as we learn what works best but the actual day of the food drive can be exhausting. We are very tired at the end of the day but we feel great knowing that, because of our efforts, families in need will have food on their tables - and that feels great!
Questions, comments and blog ideas are always welcome!
